Can our Supreme Court finally decide what is right about death?

Change the Sue Rodriguez decision and have no regret?

Let Canadians die with the assistance of doctors in our last breath?

So we can adapt to reality just like they did in Quebec.

Those on death's door should not be deprived of our right to die,

Gather family and friends; pray or say the final goodbyes in style,

Though this not a pleasant thought; its better than compulsion,

Because an unpleasant death can be a cause of revulsion.

Half the European countries and four US states have it now,

The result of referendums which they have but we're not allowed,

And we have no recall of weird politicians; so we are stuck,

Do we need changes to our Charter or are we out of luck?

Our high-up politicians seem to think that they are right,

Therefore death-with-dignity will be kept out of sight,

And binding referendums might be considered a national sin,

This idea has to be kept hidden so that they continue to win.

There comes a time in each one of our lives when we will die,

The real problem here is that we don't know where when or why,

And our  establishment wants to keep things the way they are,

No referendums; no death with dignity because thats too far.

Quebec may have solved this problem but we are not allowed,

They have death-with-dignity, referendums and they talk in French out loud,

Maybe we should change our ways but how do we do that?

And why is this issue hidden and so difficult to get at?

Less than half Canadians find it necessary to vote,

Politicians like this so they never mention it or take note,

Because they were elected by a very small minority,

No compulsory voting will come under their authority.

So other proposed changes can be swept under the rug,

And in City Hall or the Commons; they can look quite smug,

Definitely no referendums will ever be allowed,

Though they can be used by that strange Quebec crowd.

And their death with dignity will never be allowed here,

Our old seniors have to stay; they're not allowed to just disappear,

Because Sue Rodriguez with Lou Gehrig's disease was banned,

No death with dignity for her and the High Court thought it was grand.

Binding referendums could solve our election problems,

Long before our politicians get stationed in the Commons,

And subjects they avoid could be brought up for discussion,

Not swept under the rug for fear of a real repercussion.

Where death with dignity is banned and never mentioned,

Though they have it in Quebec but it could still cause tension,

Have they let their rank and authority go to their heads?

Is it just the provinces or is it just the Ottawa feds?

Our politicians will not allow binding referendums in any way,

It doesn't matter what you do, scream, shout, holler or say,

A binding referendum could compel our politicians what  to do,

We have never had one although Quebec has had a few.

Those of us who want death with dignity are discriminated,

Maybe the establishment seems to think, we should be eliminated?

We know this, these days because of the way we are treated,

Nothing can be done they say and this subject is now completed.

Should someone stand up and rewrite Trudeau's Constitution?

Would it help get rid of a lot of their political pollution?

So we could have binding referendums and death with dignity,

And we would not have to tolerate their party bigotry.

Half of Europe, Quebec and four US states have it now,

That's death with dignity that they have and we wonder how?

Do we have democracy or is this nothing of the sort?

Is this all because of decisions from our appointed High Court?

If you are lucky enough to survive to a hundred and five

And you know by then, that you haven't got much more time to stay alive,

You cannot choose the way, the when or the where, you will die,

Because death with dignity is banned and there is no reason why.

Though Quebec and four US states have changed their laws,

But we are not allowed and not even allowed to see these flaws,

We need one politician with a loud voice who can see the light,

Because those we have now, seem to be dull and not too bright.

This subject is not talked about because religious folk distain,

Not like Sue Rodriguez they said, but she died in awful ALS pain,

It's not easy to focus your thoughts on your last breath on earth,

The most radical thought you ever had since the day of your birth.

Does anyone know how we might get a referendum on this?

Is it the establishment that has said, there is nothing to miss?

Has it ever been discussed anywhere that mattered?

Could those who are dying in pain, feel that their lives are shattered?

Have you seen this mentioned on TV or read it in the papers?

Media moguls seem to avoid it, as if they were doing favours,

Because death with dignity is religion-establishment banned,

And if we go down that road, we will be completely damned.

Quebec may have referendums but we are still not allowed,

We have to remain the obedient quiet and disciplined crowd,

Quebec has death with dignity but does any of this ring a bell?

It seems to depend on the province, where you live and dwell.
