Is there an omnipresent group in Ottawa that rules the roost?

Where no death-with-dignity law will be allowed or produced?

And we don't have a recall system so they stay forever there,

Nothing is allowed to change there, so we don't have a prayer.

Ontario politicians don't seem to care and why should they dare?

They never heard of doctor assisted death and just stare,

But they have it in Quebec and how did they manage to do that?

Did they have some friendly useful politicians go to bat?

Reading about Ontario politicians will cause you to think,

As their spending and debts and taxes come with a wink,

Helpless voters wondering what they may have done wrong,

And who is that in the background singing a song?

Why can't death with dignity be made legal now?

Why does Ottawa, after all these years, still disallow?

Is it religion, Supreme Court or they just can't agree?

Would it help if we asked an unelected Senate appointee?

Don't they realize that each and every one of them will die?

And they may not agree with the outcome as they say good-bye

In great pain and agony and the doctor can't give death assistance

Because established upper echelon put up resistance

They say they have it in Quebec now but we're still not sure

Are they that far ahead of us and are we just immature?

Someone somewhere should have the answer to this trouble

Or do we have to wait for another Ottawa bubble?

The day you die will be the most important day in your life,

With no doctor-assisted-death, there's certain added strife,

Our party politicians think that maybe they will never die,

So there is no need to change or even bother to ask why.

We should be able to influence our politicians up there,

If we had binding referendums and compel them to care,

But how can we do that when they refuse to ever change?

We need to rewrite Trudeau's Charter and rearrange.

But where can we find a leader  to get us out of this mess?

Because party politicians already sold their souls so no progress

We know we should be able but how do we bring change about?

A Constitution with no binding referendums; so we doubt.

Too many of my old comrades died in hospital beds,

Though I can still remember almost everything they said,

They had no choice about when, where or how they would die,

Without doctor assisted death, they couldn't even ask why?

It's a subject that our politicians will never discuss,

Because in Canada, they believe, it was ever thus,

Though they got it in Quebec which is a mystery to me,

Should we pay attention or pretend we don't see?

We don't have binding referendums so we're stuck,

No death with dignity for you or a non Quebec Canuck,

And our politicians are busy at the moment, here and there,

Without death-with-dignity, we don't have a prayer.

Compulsory voting by mail or by hand should be  the law,

Proportional representation, set-date elections and recall,

Doctor assisted death made legal by a binding referendum check

Tax-and-spend politicians should be considered grotesque.

All senators elected every five years on another set date,

Party politicians can't ignore the public in their debates,

Trudeau's Charter of Rights up for change every ten years,

If this can come to pass; Canadians will have no fears.

But for some unknown reason, we have to tolerate the here and now

No death with dignity because it might cause a row,

No politician can be recalled, no matter what he has done,

Busy travelling the world and talking on his cell phone.

Our Navy had tot time every day for hundreds of years,

Very strong old Royal Navy tradition for comrades and peers,

It was an up-spirits culture of two and a half ounces of rum,

If you were there back then, you knew the rules of thumb.

It had to be drank right there on the quarterdeck at noon,

Groups of matlos sitting around in little communes,

I'd like to go back again if only for one more tot time,

But they banned it in the seventies -- not very sublime.

And now they came up with more rules because some sailors got drunk,

They must have been too drunk to even find their own bunks,

I don't think the navy is as much fun now as it used to be,

Is it just what they are writing in the papers or is it just me?

Many Canadian politicians go to Ottawa and hide,

Not all of them but many do, on their political ride,

So no doctor assisted suicide for you, my friend,

Even if you are in big pain and going 'round the bend.

Why would that be, and we seem to be caught in a trap?

We have no binding referendums and we can't give them a slap?

But we do have distant elections every five years,

Though nothing changes despite our tweets and tears.

The ideal death would be in comfort, dignity and peace,

No pain, discomfort or annoyance from something indiscreet,

No great need to be kept alive by artificial means,

Prolonging a painful life using some medical machines.
