Now hidden stuff -- never mentioned in parliament or on TV,

Even when the sick and dying from cancer make a political plea,

So we are caught in the dilemma of religion, politics and death,

And prominent party silence from the right, middle and left,

And we have no binding referendums so we cannot get a change,

Therefore nothing changes and they are too busy to arrange,

Trudeau gave us his Charter but with no binding referendums,

Can't force them to change so sometimes we really feel like bums.

Because doctor assisted death could be extremely important,

Otherwise you could be left to die alone in pain and torment,

We have elections every five years and what more could we want?

How about referendums and death with dignity and no need to taunt?

Some people want to know the date and time that they will die,

When they will have that meeting with god somewhere up in the sky,

Obviously an important date but some say it can't be planned,

Death with dignity is forbidden; though it would be grand.

Why are some so completely opposed to doctor assisted death?

It can't be planned even if you are sick and on your last breath,

The result of decision made by Supreme Court appointees,

You just can't have it; no matter how many times you say please.

Smoke and mirror political bafflegab galore,

After years and years, and it gets worse and we still don't know  the score,

We don't have binding referendums so we can't change a thing,

But there's an election somewhere off in the distance; did the phone ring?

It's not possible to avoid your upcoming death,

It's something in your future; I hope you don't regret,

There's no easy way out because death with dignity is banned,

Therefore there's nothing we can do and it can't be planned.

The government of course has this issue swept under the rug,

And your local party politician will just give you a shrug,

A real leader would be able to figure out a way through this,

Instead of pretending that they are too busy and just dismiss.

This is a subject; you are barely aware it exists,

It's illegal, which the preachers, priests and politicians persist,

They did it to Sue Rodriguez when she wanted to die,

She had painful Lou Gehrig's disease and that was why.

Why have they forbidden death-with-dignity as though it's a sin?

The Sue Rodriguez Supreme Court case says we can't win,

So we may die in pain and sorrow though neither is much fun,

Not something to look forward to when your days are almost done.

This may not seem important to you now but eventually it will,

And the Ottawa establishment is still looking down from the hill,

We need leadership and binding referendums to get through this,

We are forbidden to have them and you can almost hear the hiss

How did Quebec get death with dignity and we are not allowed?

Nothing can change and the establishment feels quite proud,

Many rules, regulations and laws should be rearranged,

So that we can die in dignity with little pain and no shame.

Why should Quebec have death-with-dignity and we're not allowed?

Is this considered equality or should we keep our heads bowed?

Those who are opposed, think of every reason and rule to have it banned,

Or keep things exactly as they are which they think is quite grand.

Various religions teach that suicide is a mortal sin,

Their ministers and priests are on TV making an awful din,

This anti suicide rule has been in force for a thousand years,

This is the reason why they have to many pompous peers.

So we need political leadership to take us over this hump,

Otherwise, politically speaking, we might be headed for the dump,

Or we could move to an area that has it; if we are allowed,

Or go to Switzerland and meet their death-with-dignity crowd.

A Charter without binding referendums is just words on paper,

Not a sacred Charter -- but a lot of pompous political vapour,

Need recall for incompetent politicians and set-date elections,

We need death with dignity and the ability to make corrections.

Need compulsory voting and proportional representation,

Something that is needed in this democratic nation,

All politicians including senators should be elected,

Not secretly and quietly as now, within a party: selected.

A constitution should be voted on in a national referendum,

Not quietly passed by a group of party politicians at random,

So we the people know it is our Constitution -- not their's,

Not left in a back room in Ottawa as though no one cares.

I’M GETTING WORRIED …. JAN 8TH, 2014

I’m worried because I’m getting old and I’m running out of time,

But if I could arrange when and where and why to die, that would be fine,

But our Supreme Court will not allow death-with-dignity now,

So it’s my schedule and their schedule in conflict somehow.

And as a mere member of society, I’m not allowed to change much,

I should shut up, say nothing, be quiet and just go to church,

But the Swiss have binding referendums so why can’t we?

They don’t have to always bow our heads, say yes and please.

If we had binding referendums, we could decide what to change,

Death-with-dignity could be voted on and then not seem so strange,

But our hundreds of appointees in the Senate don’t want this,

A referendum to end their cushy jobs could be their abyss.
