I would prefer to die on my own terms, when and where and how I like,

Politicians and pompous priests get upset and take a hike,

This is serious stuff I know and should be openly discussed,

Because eventually everyone we know will have to adjust,

I don’t care whose jurisdiction this affair comes under,

Though certain activists may call the whole thing a blunder,

Dictatorial Supreme Court decisions about my death,

Imposed on Sue Rodriguez just before she took her last breath.

This whole affairs has been in and out of courts for many years,

The Sue Rodriguez case with Lou Gehrig’s disease led to tears,

The State of Oregon has death with dignity, so why can’t we?

These judges will have to do something soon where we all agree,

There was a time when various vagrants could be locked up in jail,

But politicians thought those vagrancy laws were harsh and would fail,

Eventually they wrote the Ontario Safe Streets Act – another mistake,

It was too late when they decided that this too would not take.

We could correct these problems with binding referendums,

Unfortunately this is not in their political curriculums,

Then it get’s worse because these political problems can’t be solved.

But where the hell are we going and what will it involve?

Our secret-list High Court appointees run all our legal affairs,

We don’t know any of their names; who they are or who really cares?

If we had binding referendums, we could supersede this High Court,

Would we need to change Trudeau’s Charter and get more support?

They want us involved in every African and Mideast affair,

As though we can solve their political problems and we should care,

You can read this in the papers every day, where we should be involved,

Just send soldiers or sailors there and everything will be solved.

Though it is difficult; which war to pick and on whose side,

Because the next dictator is waiting just standing by,

We don’t need for a referendum because they will decide,

And on the Highway of Heroes, we can watch those who died.

No proportional representation or elected High Court,

The ones who allowed the Insite clinic for drug-addict comfort,

Nor can we elect senators or have death with dignity,

Are you getting the message but don’t think of this as indignity.

Some criminals seem to hide behind publication bans,

Which their lawyers demand as part of their defense legal plans,

And the judges tend to go along and oblige their requests,

A symptom of these soft politically correct times I guess.

Therefore there may be convicted criminals walking on your street,

Because of secret courtroom decisions and not very discreet,

Therefore publication bans in criminal cases should be banned,

And no more discreet secret deals as judges and lawyers planned.

The justice system should be a system of open public courts,

No secret sweetheart deals for criminals and their cohorts,

While you and I watch from a distance and wonder why

And also wonder what other secret deals were made up in the sky.

Less than half of us vote with an attitude of, who really cares,

Stephen Harper: please make voting compulsory in our affairs,

Your eventual legacy should be something we like and agree,

Not Joe Clark of two hundred days, or Mulroney of the GST.

Not Trudeau, he of his Charter of Rights for various refugees,

Chretien fixing up his hometown to get more employees,

Please get us binding referendums and death with dignity,

Or your legacy could be something like theirs -- full of indignity.

Because I helped the Conservatives and I’m on your side,

But we need major changes and it’s not something we can hide,

And let us vote for the Supreme Court judges who seem to run this land,

Dressed up in their Santa Clause suits not unlike members of a band.

Supreme Court judges appointed from an extremely secret list,

Who makes this list, who writes the names, who get’s kissed and who gets pissed?

Who gets the big bucks and who gets to wear the red Santa Clause clothes?

Are they so high up, that no one can even think that we could oppose?

The whole affair is so sacred; it must be secretly discussed,

In hidden places far away behind closed doors with those they trust,

Is it like some religious affair with their fancy red gowns?

Do they have chanting music and some other strange holy sounds?

Why do they appear like members of some secretive hidden cult?

Wearing those funny Santa Clause suits like some strange occult

Or is this a silent scream that we should elect our High Court?

Is there a political party that might give this some support?

And they should not think about euthanasia as very strange.

This affair has been in and out of Canadian courts for years,

The Sue Rodriguez case with Lou Gehrig’s disease led to tears,

The State of Oregon already has death with dignity, so why can’t we?

These judges should do something soon where we can all agree.
