Are we being punished by our lack of doctor assisted death?

Though they have it in Quebec and still we get no respect,

How did they get to have a provincial referendum on this?

We have politicians here and there but is there something they missed?

Why is it that we seldom read about this in the papers?

Is  this a subject that is kept hidden from the neighbours?

Is it because all the religious folk seem to be opposed?

Is that why this subject seems to be hidden and closed?

Is it because the High Court refused Sue Rodriguez permission?

Dying with Lou Gehrig's disease, when she made a petition,

Is this the reason why we are denied binding referendums?

How long do Canadians have to wait for an addendum?

Quebec has still not signed Trudeau's Constitution and why not?

Is it, that its not important or maybe they just forgot?

But they have referendums and death with dignity and we don't,

What can we do about this because our politicians won’t.

But Quebec has death with dignity which we are not allowed,

They also had a referendum which made them all feel so proud,

Its obvious now that death-with-dignity is provincial stuff,

But Ontario politicians seem to do nothing but bluff.

If you are reading these poems; you should find something better to do,

Go for a walk around the block and see if anything is new,

And if you live in cottage country, you can go for a boat ride,

But if the lake is big, remember to stay on your own side.

We should realize by now that we are only here for a while,

And death with dignity is the only way to go out in style,

The death issue cannot be avoided or hidden under the mat,

And no politician bishop or pompous priest will go to bat.

Maybe you think it will never happen because you will never die,

Or that it's so far in the future that there's no need to ask why,

Scotland, Quebec and Switzerland have referendums now,

But here in Ontario, our odd politicians will just not allow.

We need a new politician to come out of the woods and shout,

Get us some changes and say what death-with-dignity is about,

Get us some binding referendums so we the people have control,

And even have an unheard of thing -- a public opinion pole.

Can't live forever so one of these days, I'm going to die,

It's not important though I'd like to know the when, where and why,

Though many preachers, priests and politicians oppose this need,

They are impressed by their own importance and just want to lead.

But several US states and Quebec have death with dignity now,

But our politicians and judges look at this as causing a row,

We don't have binding referendums so we can't get their attention,

They look at the mere mention of these ideas as causing tension.

Of course you don't know because you have never read it or been told,

Subjects like this are forbidden and left out in the cold,

Like binding referendums -- never mentioned in the press,

Things we should have but we have to be satisfied with less.

Most of the women in my age group are very very old,

Many sitting in the lobby of a senior's building so I'm told,

Peaceful and quiet where absolutely nothing is strange,

Just waiting to die but for sure, this cannot be arranged.

Our politicians avoid any problem about death,

Maybe they think that they themselves will never run out of breath,

We do not have death with dignity and the subject may be banned,

But Quebec, half of Europe and eight US States think it's grand.

We can only influence our politicians at elections,

If we had binding referendums, we could make many corrections,

So our politicians are quite pleased at the way things are right now,

Can't mention death with dignity because that might cause a row.

It seems that all our politicians have been told to stay quiet,

They can oppose death with dignity and there will be no riot,

That's Ottawa and Toronto politicians because no one cares,

Not like Quebec where they seem to have fixed these affairs.

Maybe they know more in Quebec where they mostly speak French,

They have a death-with-dignity law while we stand in a trench,

Media moguls will not allow much to be written about this,

Nor about binding referendums, already held by the Swiss.

So we can't rock the boat and bring these changes about,

Which goes to show that we the people have very little clout,

And we can't change Trudeau's Charter because that's not allowed.

Many of these details are seldom if ever mentioned aloud.

Too many politicians want to be politically correct,

So doctor-assisted death is not something we can expect,

The holy church-bound religious crowd are totally opposed,

They consider this a mortal sin that should not be disclosed.

This probably won't bother you till you are about to die in pain,

And the medical doctors are legally obliged to abstain,

This is serious stuff -- seldom if ever mentioned in the press,

Your friends don't talk about this so no one is in distress.

Though half of Europe, Quebec and ten US States have it now,

You might wonder when all this legal stuff happened and how?

Because we have been quietly and constantly kept in the dark,

And we are busy at the moment trying to find a spot to park.
